The Sunshine Coast has the second highest number of Facebook users per capita, with 82% of residents using the social network, according to research by The Creative Collective and its sister company The Training Collective.
For the second consecutive year, the Sunshine Coast-based creative agencies have conducted research across Australia’s major cities and towns into the number of users on two of the more popular social networks – Facebook and LinkedIn.
Figures sourced direct from the social networks and compared against the 2013 Australian Bureau of Statistics estimates revealed that Darwin, in the Northern Territory, has the highest number of Facebook users per capita with 91.9% of residents on the social network.
As a major business hub, and with its Australian operation headquartered there, Sydney is LinkedIn’s most popular city per capita, with 27.7% of its population using the site. In comparison, only 20% of the Sunshine Coast’s population uses LinkedIn.
The city with the lowest number of users per capita for Facebook was Perth (63.8%), with Townsville at 10.3% of Linkedin users.
The Creative Collective’s Founder, Yvette Adams, says that while many people are on the social networks, a majority are still not sure about how to use them to their full potential.
“We hope that by uncovering these statistics, we can show the incredible growth of the networks year on year, as well as the networks’ very high penetration rate on a per city or town basis, and build awareness that social media is here to stay and a marketing channel that needs to be taken seriously,” she said.
